April 4, 2001 Symposium: Top

On April 4, 2001, the Berkeley Outreach Roundtable will host the second part of its Symposium on Evaluation and Accountability in Outreach. The planning committee outlined the following desired outcomes for this meeting:

1) develop a common understanding of the UCB Outreach-School/University Partnership goals
2) increase our understanding of the needs of the K-12 community as it relates to evaluation/research issues 3) establish a clearer picture of how various outreach interventions/programs can support and align with UCB     Outreach-School/University Partnership goals
4) introduce a model of how to think through an evaluation plan for outreach programs using a case study     approach
5) help facilitate face-to-face and electronic networking and collaboration among folks with similar     interventions, content, or data collection challenges As this will be a working, hands-on meeting, please be     ready to talk about your program's goals and evaluation plans.

April 4 Symposium Agenda: Top

8:30- 9:00
Coffee and Networking
9:00
Agenda Introduction/Framing the day's work Today's work will continue to focus on the importance of developing an evaluation plan for outreach programs, and to understand the interplay of campus goals (as per the Implementation Plan) and the specific goals of each program. We will work within the philosophy of the outreach vision that emphasizes collaboration and coordination using the metaphor of developing a "quilt" - with programs being complementary to each other, no program fulfilling all goals. We are moving towards developing a mutually beneficial approach to working in partnership with K-14. This process should be inclusive and empowering to participants. We will be using a case study methodology, but everyone will be involved and participate
9-10:30
Introduction and agenda Items 1-4

1. Presentation of campus goals for outreach (as per the Implementation Plan) and the issue of how specific outreach programs' work is aligned with these goals. What we want everyone to think about is how programs connect to the larger campus vision. Gail Kaufman, Chief of Staff, Student Affairs

2. What is the interplay between campus goals/program goals with various types of outreach interventions such as: professional development, curriculum development, distance learning, after-school tutoring, mentoring etc. Isabel Hawkins,

3. K-12 Partnership concerns regarding program evaluation Cathie Kosel,
Randi Hagen
, Coordinator of Accountability Reporting for West Contra Costa County Unified School District
  4. Opportunity to work in small groups to share program goals and how they are or are not aligned with     campus goals - question of how to develop better alignment?
10:30-11:45
5. Case Study Exercise: One program, Berkeley's Best to Cal developed by Stiles Hall/Dave Stark, has     agreed to be the outreach program example for our case study.) Lisa Kala will walk the program through     the beginning part of the Evaluation Model she presented on March 2, 2001 Symposium. Dave Stark,

Lisa Kala, Graduate School of Education and Director of Excellence Through Collaboration in Outreach (ECO)

11:45- Noon
6. Next Steps: How do we continue what we have started? Some ideas include --developing a set of     meetings (almost like a mini-course) for folks interested in evaluation to work together in designing and     implementing their plans; facilitating face to face and electronic networking, collaboration among people     with similar interventions, content or data college challenges, and others. Evaluation of today's workshop  Gregg Thomson, Director of the Office of Student Research

Notes from the March 2, 2001 Symposium: Top

As promised, attached are the notes from the last segment of the Symposium on Friday, on issues that emerged and ideas for next steps.
The following participants volunteered to be on a planning committee for a follow-up tentatively scheduled for Wednesday April 4 (we have the Alumni House on hold for 9-2 that day, if we decide we want it):

Rory Bled
Gregg Thomson
Chase Adams
Cathie Kosel
Barbara Tukiguchi
Isabel Hawkins

I want to thank everyone for your participation and upbeat evaluations of the day. I know there was a great deal of information, and probably too many "talking heads" but overall you seemed to have found the day useful, and would like a follow-up "working meeting." I will try to set up a meeting with the planning committee ASAP, if you are interested in joining this effort please email me. Also -- if your program would be interested in being a "model" that we might use for explaining the process one goes through in order to develop an evaluation plan, let me know. Meanwhile, please hold April 4 on your calendar, and as soon as we have specific plans, I will update you. Thanks again for your involvement in this work. Gail Kaufman

On March 2, 2001, 12-5 PM, at the Alumni House on the UCB campus, Student Affairs will be hosting the first in a series of Berkeley Outreach Roundtable Symposia. This first symposium will focus on Evaluation and Accountability and provide an opportunity for Vice Chancellor Genaro Padilla to update the campus community on the status of our outreach effort and the development of a campus vision and plan.

The agenda includes opportunities for participants to gain a better understanding of the context and challenges in evaluation and accountability from a variety of educational perspectives. The Symposium will compare and contrast the viewpoints of Superintendents, teachers, and data managers in school districts; of the state legislature and the Office of the President; and of the UC Berkeley campus community, faculty, and its outreach programs.

In addition, the Symposium will focus on how we can develop a common language and understanding about evaluation and how campus outreach programs can contribute towards campus goals. The Symposium is open to the campus community.

In order to Register please use the on-line RSVP form below, or fax the form to (510) 642-8153, Attn. Catherine Wu.

Space is limited, so please RSVP as soon as possible. Lunch will be served.
