Recreational Sports And The Division of Student Affairs

As you know, on July 1 of this year, Rec Sports joined our Student Affairs family. This was done as part of campus-wide efforts to align services and streamline the student experience. In particular, the work in Rec Sports aligns strongly to Student Affairs’ commitment to holistic student well-being.

As we have learned more about Rec Sports and they have learned more about the Division, we have decided to align some services to take advantage of scale, specialties, and consistency. Specifically, we will align our Communications, IT, Finance, Business Operations, and Facilities functions. We will also leverage business development skills and experience in Rec Sports to support meaningful partnerships for the entire Division.

In keeping with the Division’s structure, our plan is for the Rec Sports staff in these positions to join these respective areas effective October 19. Our current goal is to retain all of the staff; there are no plans for any layoffs as a result of this transition.

The Rec Sports leadership team has spoken with those who will be joining Student Affairs units and there will be continuing conversations with more specific details as they are determined. For most staff, their duties will initially remain the same. Over the course of the next several months we’ll spend time learning more about the various needs and services of Rec Sports and the Division to evaluate if any potential changes to job duties or office locations are needed. Some of the supervisors transitioning may have their supervisory duties shift as we align new teams.

I’m excited not only for Rec Sports to have joined our division, but I am also looking forward to talented members of Rec Sports staff bringing their unique skills to our Division. In turn, Rec Sports will be able to leverage the existing strengths and staff support within Student Affairs to support their successful programs. This includes more opportunities to build up programs such as WorkFit, Cal Adventures, and Cal Youth Programs. I foresee many great opportunities to collaborate together to reach out collective goals for a more seamless student experience.

Welcome University Health Services and Recreational Sports to the Division of Student Affairs

We are delighted to have grown our Student Affairs team. As part of campus-wide efforts to align services and streamline the student experience, two units have joined the Division of Student Affairs effective July 1, 2017: University Health Services and Recreational Sports.

While both units serve the entire campus community, these moves underscore our commitment to the holistic student experience. Please join us in giving their staff a warm welcome into the division.

University Health Services (UHS) provides comprehensive medical, mental health, health promotion, wellness, and insurance services to Berkeley students as well as occupational health, worksite wellness, employee assistance, disability management, ergonomic, eldercare, and work/life services to faculty and staff. UHS is led by Assistant Vice Chancellor Claudia Covello, and employs over 300 staff, including physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, medical assistants, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, health educators, registered dietitians, physical therapists, pharmacists, lab scientists, radiology technicians, and other health and administrative professionals.

Recreational Sports (Rec Sports) is dedicated to enhancing the knowledge, wellness, fitness, personal skills and quality of life for students, faculty, staff, and the community. There are more than 40,000 student members and more than 10,000 non-student members. Rec Sports is led by Interim Director Brigitte Lossing, and is served by more than 50 professional staff and 500 student staff.

Their internal team structures will remain the same, and their leadership will report directly to interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Steve Sutton. We are in the process of planning a welcoming event, so stay tuned for more details.

We are excited to have these new partners in the division and we look forward to partnering together to better serve our students and our campus community.


Berkeley Recreational Sports (Rec Sports)

On July 1, 2017, the reporting line for Berkeley Recreational Sports (Rec Sports) will change from the Division of Administration & Finance to the Division of Student Affairs. Rec Sports interim director, Brigitte Lossing will report directly to Steve Sutton. This change was recommended as part of the recent external review of student services to help align student wellness services together. The transition, combined with the recent addition of University Health Services to Student Affairs’ portfolio, gives the university an opportunity to offer more seamless services for students while continuing to provide wellness resources for faculty, staff and the broader campus community.

We would also like to take the opportunity to thank Solly Fulp, executive director of University Business Partnerships & Services, Brigitte Lossing, and the entire department for their leadership over the past two years. Rec Sports has made significant strides in generating additional revenue support, enhancing department services as well as further connecting with the broader campus community. A few examples include: securing Under Armour support for Sport Club teams; the installation of state-of-the-art cardio equipment; onboarding a new software data management system; the addition of eSports as an official club; and collaborating with our students on the recently approved gender-inclusive locker room project.

As we make this change, Rec Sports will build off recent accomplishments and continue to partner with colleagues across campus to foster and support a healthy university. Rec Sports will also continue to explore innovative revenue opportunities and initiatives that enhance the knowledge, wellness, fitness, and quality of life for the entire Berkeley community.


University Health Services

As of July 1, 2017, University Health Services’ (UHS) reporting line will change from the Division of Administration & Finance to the Division of Student Affairs.

During the transition, UHS and Student Affairs will continue to collaborate, ensuring that the critical health and wellness work UHS does for students, faculty and staff is strengthened. UHS will continue its many productive collaborations with colleagues in Administration & Finance. Overall, this reporting line change will be an opportunity to enhance the experience of all members in our Berkeley community.


The Lawrence Hall of Science

As of July 1, 2017 the Lawrence Hall of Science reporting line will be changing from Student Affairs to the Vice Chancellor for Research. This move was recommended as part of a recent external review of Student Affairs, because the Lawrence Hall of Science is better aligned with the function and role of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. We feel that this change will serve the interests of the public science center’s staff and visitors well.

As part of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, the Lawrence Hall of Science will be joining seven other museums, which form the Berkeley Natural History Museums, along with an accomplished network of diverse research units, spanning physical sciences, social sciences, and humanities. This affiliation will provide the Hall with a community that is similarly engaged in creative and innovative research, education, and outreach.
