Cal Housing
Cal Housing held its first-ever Housing Fair on March 9, 2016. The Housing Fair was designed to assist UC Berkeley students with their housing needs. This event helped make the housing search easier for students and offered them a unique opportunity to connect with resources, including local property managers, financial aid, co-ops, and Cal Rentals. Housing’s marketing efforts proved successful: 1,976 students opened the event email and 2,405 saw the event in Facebook. Between 750 and 1,000 students attended.

Cal 1 Card
Cal 1 Card participated in the 23rd Annual National Association of Campus Card Users (NACCU) Conference in April 2016 with hundreds of administrative and technical representatives from campus card offices across the country and abroad. As part of this event, UC Berkeley was chosen to host a campus tour for a select group of conference attendees. The focus was on sharing best practices, innovative use of card technology, and discussion of the latest technology available. The Cal 1 Card tour illustrated how services are delivered and managed on campus, and was a great success with the support of other student service providing units within RSSP, the Division of Student Affairs, and Central Campus. Several long-time NACCU conference attendees said that this was “by far the best tour” they had ever experienced.

Early Childhood Education Program
The Early Childhood Education Program (ECEP) is one of 189 programs to receive a grant from the Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS) in Alameda County, which provides county-sponsored quality improvement training, coaching, and resources to strengthen programs and meet national standards. The national grant supports a shared definition of childcare quality based on reliable and validated research, with a comprehensive and consistent approach to assessment of the program. Additionally, it provides early education providers like ECEP with a consistent way to communicate to parents and caregivers about quality, building increased consumer awareness about, and demand for, high-quality childcare.

Cal Dining (Includes Catering & Concessions)
Cal Dining set a new record by selling more than 5,100 optional meal plans, an increase of 20 percent from the previous fiscal year. Additionally, Cal Catering handled over 3,000 events, including the Clinton Global Initiative, which hosted former President Bill Clinton. Cal Dining supported the UC Global Food Initiative by volunteering staff time to assist in ordering, stocking, and inventory of food items, as well as spearheading a fundraising campaign for the UC Berkeley Food Pantry that raised more than $55,000 in food inventory. In addition to supporting campus programs, Cal Dining collaborated with the County of Alameda Food Bank to provide fresh produce to students in need. Even with the increase in demand, Cal Dining continued to grow its sustainability and health efforts by launching new residential dining menus that featured a wide variety of plant-forward items. Dining also celebrated the grand opening of Brown’s, whose menu consists almost entirely of local foods that are grown, milled, preserved, and processed within 250 miles of the Berkeley campus. These efforts were recognized by both the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability and the National Association of College & University Food Services.

Residential Programs & Operations
Residential Programs and Operations successfully restructured and expanded the scope of the student Peer Review Board, which has been operating for twenty-five years and is the only peer review board in the UC system. The Peer Review Board now focuses on student leadership development, increases skill capacity to resolve conduct cases and reduce workload of professional staff, and completes outreach and programmatic efforts to educate residential students on their rights and responsibilities. These efforts benefit all residents and contribute to overall well-being of the campus community, while also supporting professional staff work, such as resolving close to 2,300 student conduct cases this past year.

Residential Education
Residential Education continued to enhance the out-of-classroom experience; this year it redesigned the residential curriculum and created five learning outcomes for residents. Residential Education enriched residential student lives with more than 1,200 community development and programmatic efforts, connecting residents with faculty, challenging them to think about diversity and inclusion, and providing much needed education about mental health and wellness. These programs and events reached many thousands of students, with almost 1,000 attending a single Residence Hall Association event. In addition, Residential Education staff shared their knowledge on campus and nationally, by participating on campus committees; presenting at professional conferences; and hosting two conferences (one for professionals systemwide, and one for Women in the Western Association of College University Housing Officers, with representatives from public and private universities throughout California).
