Our Plan

Through “BUILD: Equity through Literacy” every BUSD 3rd grader in need of extra support will be matched with a trained Cal student literacy tutor. We will maintain tutor/tutee matches for the entire academic year and even into the summer, when low-income students are most likely to experience literacy skills loss. Teams of tutors will report to the literacy coaches at each elementary school in Berkeley and will be trained on literacy assessment, tutoring strategies, and school-day instructional methods. By combining and coordinating campus tutoring efforts, BUILD: Equity through Literacy will maximize the impact of UC Berkeley student tutors and ensure that we meet urgent district needs.
