April 15, 2021 - Housing for 2021-22 + Virtual Housing Fair
This message was sent to all students on 04/15/21.
Dear Bears,
Many of you are thinking ahead to Fall 2021, especially as it relates to housing. With that in mind, we are writing to provide resources and support as you consider where to live next year.
As announced by Chancellor Carol Christ, UC Berkeley and other UC campuses are working toward returning to primarily in-person instruction for Fall 2021. There is much that we still don’t know about what the fall semester will look like, including the capacity of our campus housing buildings. Future decisions will remain dependent on recommendations from state and local public health authorities, and such decisions may be adjusted to help enhance the safety and well-being of the community.
We know that many students will want to live near campus in order to take in-person classes, use campus facilities, and spend time with other students when public health guidance allows. We recommend that you do your research now and make your housing selection as soon as possible.
Making housing decisions under these changing circumstances is difficult, but campus staff are here to support you. We recommend students read their lease or housing agreement carefully and understand the lease terms, options for termination, subleasing or any other options that could add flexibility to the agreement. For example, some properties may offer a month-to-month or semester-to-semester leasing term, which may be a more desirable option in the case of an unexpected shift in public health guidance.
Applied for campus housing?
If you’ve applied for a Cal Housing option such as the residence halls and campus apartments, you will be hearing directly from Cal Housing with those details.
Attend the virtual off-campus housing fair
Cal Rentals invites you to a virtual housing fair, where you can speak with local property managers and landlords about availability, take virtual tours, and enter to win prizes. The fair will take place on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 from 11:00am - 1:00pm PT; register to attend.
Find resources and support
Given the strong demand for housing we’re already seeing, we encourage students considering off-campus options to review these additional housing support resources listed below:
- Cal Rentals: UC Berkeley’s free off-campus rental listings service
- Student Legal Services: Resources on issues involving landlord-tenant disputes, evictions, etc. Find COVID-related lease guidance and a Tip Sheet on Leases
- Basic Needs Center: Housing resources and support
- City of Berkeley: COVID-19 Tenant Resources
- Berkeley Rent Stabilization Board: resources and guidance for city of Berkeley renters
- California Department of Real Estate: California Tenants Rights
- Meal Plans: For those living in off-campus housing, Cal Dining also offers semester-long off-campus meal plans
We’ll share additional information as it becomes available. In the meantime, please review the resources above as you consider your options.
Sincerely,
Stephen C. Sutton, Ed.D.
