January 11, 2021 - REQUIRED 10-Day Self-sequestering (Spring-start students)

Sent on behalf of Cal Housing to Spring-start students living in the residence halls and campus apartments on 01/11/21:

Dear resident,

We look forward to welcoming you to campus housing this week. Over the past two weeks, COVID-19 has surged in California, and the regional stay at home order remains in effect for the Bay Area. Public health officials expect January and February to be particularly dangerous times following the holiday period.

In the Bay Area, hospitals are filling up and formal orders are in place, with several jurisdictions requiring a 10-day quarantine following travel.

In light of this increased risk, we are writing to remind all residents to be extremely diligent about mandatory self-sequestering upon your return.

We look forward to seeing you during your pre-selected one-hour time slot on your Move-In day. If you are unable to move in on your scheduled move-in day and time, please contact Cal Housing as soon as possible at reshall@berkeley.edu. Note that you will not be permitted to move in without showing proof of having taken a UHS COVID test on your assigned move-in day via the eTang badge system through your cell phone.

Upon moving in, you will begin your 10-day self-sequester period. Self-sequestering works best when residents begin sequestering at the same time; therefore it is important that you move in on your designated day/time. More information about self-sequestering is provided below.

You will need to be tested before you can check in or gain access to your housing assignment. If you haven’t already done so, please book an appointment on eTang now for your UC Berkeley COVID-19 test. An advance appointment for the same day of your move in is required. You will need to choose an appointment time that allows you to be tested at least one hour before your move-in time slot. Please allow for transportation time between the testing location and your residence hall. For more information, please visit the University Health Services Campus Surveillance Testing page.
If you have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 90 days, you will need to follow a different process to be cleared for move-in.  Please send an email to telltang@berkeley.edu for instructions in this case.
If you test positive for COVID-19, or you have close contact with someone who tests positive, UHS contact tracers will contact you, and they may require you to temporarily move to dedicated quarantine or isolation housing. Learn more about contact tracing and our quarantine/isolation procedures: https://housing.berkeley.edu/contact-tracing.
All About Self-Sequestering
Self-sequestering means minimizing in-person interactions for a limited time. Once you move in, you will be required to self-sequester for 10 days, until your first two test results come back negative (with the second test collected at least 5 days after the first).

  • During the self-sequester period:
    • Stay in your own room. If you live in a residence hall, check out online events offered by your residence hall staff. If you live in an apartment, please plan to cook for yourself or make arrangements for food to be delivered to you.
    • You may leave your room only for essential activities such as:
      • Using the bathroom/shower
      • Picking up meals or accepting deliveries
      • Solo outdoor exercise (walking, jogging, biking, etc.)
      • Getting your regular COVID-19 test or other health care
      • Doing laundry and picking up mail
    • NO in-person gatherings, indoors or outdoors—not even with your residential household grouping.  Do not meet in your room, in lounges, or elsewhere.
  • During and after self-sequestering:
    • Wear a face covering at all times except when inside your room, brushing teeth, taking a shower, or eating.
    • Maintain a physical distance of six feet or more.
    • Frequently wash your hands.
    • No guests or visitors are allowed.
    • Get tested for COVID-19 twice per week through UHS.
    • Observe all local, county and state public health orders.

While moving in, please be sure to practice physical distancing, wear face coverings, and observe public health guidelines.

Take care, and see you soon. Be safe, Bears!  If we all work together, we will get out of this together!
