November 17, 2020 - Help slow the spread of COVID-19. Opt-in to California COVID Notify

Campus Community,

Yesterday, UC Berkeley launched a valuable public health tool, California COVID Notify, to help slow the spread of COVID-19. This smartphone-based exposure notification system is an extension of our traditional contact tracing efforts. It alerts you when you’ve been exposed to COVID-19, so that you can get connected to testing and medical advice.

This technology can help slow the spread even with low levels of adoption, but the more people who opt-in, the more effective it will be. Moreover, it makes it possible to reach unknown contacts. It’s a privacy-first approach: a user’s identity is never revealed, and their location is never tracked.

Opting in is easy. For iPhone users, the process involves upgrading to iOS version 14.2 and then turning on exposure notifications in settings. Android users download an app. Complete instructions for opting in on an iPhone and a private link to download the Android app are available on the California COVID Notify website.

We encourage you to opt-in today; it only takes a few minutes and is another layer of protection for the UC Berkeley community.

Take care,
Guy Nicolette, MD, CAQSM, Assistant Vice Chancellor, University Health Services
Anna Harte, MD, Medical Director, University Health Services
