Meet the Staff

Violence Prevention & Bystander Intervention Initiatives (VP&BII) is a program of the Office of the Dean of Students in the Division of Student Affairs. In addition to working closely with partners across campus, VP&BII has a committed staff of educators. Get to know more about the staff by reading their bios below.

 

Manny Avila-Vargas - Peer Educator
Manny is a second year at UC Berkeley intending to double major in Public Health and Business Administration. He has worked on campus with the ATDP Global Program as a residential counselor where he was able to help international students become immersed in and learn more about the American culture. On campus, he also serves as an administrative assistant at the UC Berkeley Experimental Social Science and Behavioral Laboratory. Manny hopes to BTC will better prepare him to create a safer environment by being empowered as an active bystander. FUN FACT, Manny is an identical twin!

Monica Casanova - Peer Educator
Monica is a junior at Berkeley majoring in Public Health and minoring in Political Economy and Public Policy. On campus, Monica has worked as a Teacher's Assistant for Public Health 116 and the UAEM's Communications Chair. Off campus, she volunteers at the Women's Cancer Resource Center in Oakland and is Health Manager at the student coop Andres Castro Arms. Monica hopes BTC will allow her to engage with students proactively as we collectively aim to unpack and tackle violence issues. Fun Fact! Monica has never liked chocolate.

Jeah Norene Clemente - Peer Educator
Jeah is a sophomore and is studying Public Health and Integrative Biology. On campus, she is a part of the Delta Gamma Fraternity. As a part of the BTC team, Jeah hopes to improve her public speaking skills so she never feel nervous speaking in front of others! Fun Fact! Jeah’s favorite ice cream flavors are Coffee and Cookies n cream. 

Merel Dagher - Senior Peer Educator
Merel is a junior at Berkeley and is studying Cognitive Science and Public Health. On campus, Merel is involved as a PEACE Tutor and PEACE Advisor. She’s also a Teacher Scholar for the Chemistry Department and a part of the SAGE Mentorship Program. As a part of this team, Merel is hoping to learn more about how she can be an active bystander in her community and take the steps necessary to increase the comfort of everyone on campus. Fun Fact! Merel’s favorite ice cream is Green Tea.

Jerry Javier - Peer Educator
Jerry is a second year at UC Berkeley studying Political Science and LGBT Studies. He is involved on campus with the Associated Students of the University of California, the Queer Alliance Resource Center and works off campus with the City of Berkeley as well. Jerry hopes that BTC will give him the the experience and knowledge to make a safer campus for the communities at Cal. Fun Fact! Jerry is from the Big Island of Hawai’i!

Sahar Priano - Peer Educator

Sahar is a 3rd year Peace and Conflict Studies major with a double minor in Italian and Middle Eastern Studies. She is involved in the Associated Students of the University of California working around sexual assault advocacy and community relations with the City of Berkeley. She also works as an intern at the Gender Equity Resource Center to educate and help foster activism. Sahar hopes to continue her involvement in peer education through BTC while expanding her abilities to give back to the Berkeley community. Fun Fact! Sahar is originally from Berkeley, let her know if you need food recommendations!

Michelle Sou - Education Coordinator
Michelle is a third year Public Health major. She is a part of Kappa Gamma Delta, as well as the Fung Fellowship for Wellness and Technology Innovations. Working as part of the staff team, Michelle hopes to gain a lot of experience and knowledge from BTC and to work with an amazing small group of people to lead workshops across the campus. Fun Fact! Michelle is left-handed.

Autumn Tate - Peer Educator

Autumn is a second year student at UC Berkeley. As of right now her major is undecided, but she’s considering majoring in Public Health. On campus, Autumn is part of the Sexual Health Education Program and the Black Student Union. As a part of the BTC team, Autumn hopes to learn more about violence prevention and also encourage others to learn more so that Cal can be a safer campus. Fun Fact! Autumn has been to the Ellen Degeneres Show 5 different times!
