Go Big! Creating a Supportive & Cohesive Staff Culture and a Place Where Students Feel Belonging & Community

 

What is GO BIG?

GO BIG is a Student Affairs-wide initiative to create a culture where staff are part of a supportive and cohesive culture where no one feel marginalized, and where students receive the best possible service and feel that they belong and are a part of the larger UC Berkeley community.

GO BIG strives to create a working environment for staff that is based on the elements of pride, trust, and community. This new environment also fosters a culture where students are empowered to work collaboratively with staff to develop a stronger Division of Student Affairs.

The Student Affairs Strategic Planning Initiative is cyclical and is comprised of three distinct phases: Dream Big, Plan Big, and GO BIG. In short, Dream Big was focused on conception, Plan Big focused on laying out the vision for the project, and now GO BIG is focused on the actual implementation of this ongoing process.

This includes, but is not limited to, activities that will take place between April 2015 and June 2016.

The specific goals of Go Big include:

  • A wider circle: We want to include as many Student Affairs team members as possible in this implementation.
  • Higher levels of staff happiness in being a part of the Student Affairs team.
  • Higher levels of student satisfaction in the service and support they receive.
  • Engaged leadership that works to support team members.

 

History of Project: Dream Big, Plan Big, GO BIG!

Since 2012, the Division of Student Affairs has been working on a strategic plan to prepare for the future of Berkeley. We sat down with students and staff and asked them to “dream big” and imagine an ideal student and staff experience for the future. After evaluating the data and reaching out to constituents and stakeholders, the division has set its focus towards one staff and one student initiative:

  1. Building a supportive and cohesive student affairs staff culture.
  2. Building a culture of belonging and community for Berkeley students.
 
Why Does This Matter?

As part of the Student Affairs team, we’re all motivated to provide the best experience for our students. We want Student Affairs to be the best place to work, where we all feel a sense of pride, trust, and community. In order to get there, we have to figure out what we’re doing well and where we can improve.

This is where YOU come in! This is your opportunity to ensure equity and inclusion are a staple of our culture.
