Dream BigThe Dream Big Initiative

In the Spring of 2012, The Division of Student Affairs began a long-term, thoughtful approach to its strategic planning. With an opportunity to be proactive and intentional in creating an organization that operates at its best and truly considers the needs of UC Berkeley students and Student Affairs staff both now and in the future, the "Dream Big" strategic planning initiative sets ambitious future-focused goals that may take ten, fifteen, or even twenty years to accomplish. The process impacts the entire division, with an approach of high involvement and participation among many stakeholders within the division and across campus.

Phase one of the project involved an extensive and in-depth methodological process of data collection and rigorous analysis of internal, external and focus group data in order to gain a broad understanding of our stakeholder’s perspectives around how to bring our two goals to life. Phase two of the Dream Big Strategic Planning Initiative focused on narrowing our focus to the key areas where we can have the greatest impact towards implementing the future state that students and staff envisioned. Leadership teams from across the Division worked collaboratively to develop innovative action portfolios grounded in the stakeholder’s vision.

In the summer of 2014 the teams came together to pitch their innovation portfolios and after a robust process of engagement with leaders from across the division, the focus has narrowed down to two key priorities that will drive the work of the Division. For students, the focus will be on building a sense of belonging and community. For staff, the focus will be on developing a cohesive and supportive culture.
