Cal In the Capital HomepageCal in the Capital (CITC)
The UC Berkeley Public Service Center

The UC Berkeley Public Service Center program Cal in the Capital (CITC) creates a vital bond between UC Berkeley students and current policymakers in Washington, DC, shaping our students to be the change-makers of tomorrow. As a hands-on summer internship experience that integrates academic learning, career exploration, and social policy, CITC prepares students to leverage their Berkeley education into meaningful, long-term social impact. The CITC legacy includes thousands of alumni who continue to share a spirit of community and civic engagement throughout their careers, both in public service and the private sector.

Our Priority

CITC is a rigorous and competitive student-run program supported by the UC Berkeley Public Service Center, connecting 65-70 students with internships serving in Congressional offices, the White House, NGOs, think tanks, federal agencies, the Institute of Medicine, the Smithsonian, and more.

In addition to contributing approximately 25,000 hours of public service during the summer, the CITC internships constitute a transformative learning experience. While still on the Berkeley campus, students complete a skills- and policy-based spring semester academic course. After arrival in our nation’s capital, interns reside in the UC Washington Center as they embark on a service project and engage in structured networking and mentoring opportunities with Cal alumni.

CITC receives nearly 200 applications each year for its coveted internships. The cost to students for the 10-week program is nearly $5,000 and since their summer internships are generally unpaid, CITC is out of reach for many Cal students. Our goal is that no student be turned away from CITC due to cost.

Our Plan

Cal in the Capital is working to expand partnerships and create new internship opportunities that will broaden the diversity of participants, further increase the depth of the applicant pool, and enhance the long-term impact of the program.

We want to significantly expand the field of students who can consider a commitment of an entire summer to voluntary service and learning in our nation’s capital, and make the program affordable for all eligible students. Raising additional funds is critical.
