ASSOCIATED STUDENTS of the UNIVERSITY CALIFORNIA
The Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC) have historically formed the heart of undergraduate engagement and activism on the Berkeley campus, advocating passionately for student needs and seeking to improve the out-of-classroom experience for all students since 1887. The ASUC supports innovative student organizations involving hundreds of student participants each year. It provides physical space and funding for activities ranging from arts and culture to community service, research and publications, minority recruitment and retention, and public conferences. As a long-time model of committed student government, the ASUC at UC Berkeley has a strong legacy of campus and community impact.
Learn more about the ASUC.
Dramatic reductions in state funding coupled with stark increases in student fees have made it much more challenging for students to engage in activities outside-the-classroom as they struggle to meet the academic and financial demands of attending Berkeley. While it is one thing to pursue engagement opportunities during college, it can be quite another to pay significant out-of-pocket expenses for the privilege. We want to make it possible for the broadest range of students to participate in ASUC-sponsored opportunities as possible – regardless of their ability to pay – leveraging the powerful commitment of Cal students to make a positive difference on our campus and the world. At the same time, we want to significantly expand our current programming to include a broad array of enhancements that will benefit not only those who participate in student government initiatives, but the entire student body represented by the ASUC.
